Developing an integrated comorbidity service for young drug users

Whilst adolescent substance misuse is itself linked to poor outcomes, adolescents with comorbid mental disorders have a significantly poorer clinical course and outcome. Further, there are low rates of detection and limited treatment options available for youth comorbidity in Australia. In conjunction with DASWest YOT and Moreland Hall, this study aims to develop a comprehensive, integrated, evidence-based assessment and treatment service for young people with comorbid substance misuse and mental health disorders. The project incorporates universal mental health screening and embedded mental health clinicians who provide training, supervision and primary and secondary consultation. This integrated model of care is currently being evaluated with a research grant from beyondblue.
